Here is what one of our recent attendees had to say about her day with us on the Year-Round Vegetable Growing gardening course:
"Having no knowledge of any of the science or ideas behind how to grow vegetables I was pleased to find I was in good company, and my fellow attendees ranged in skillset too.
Dean and Anna were hugely welcoming from the start, and treated us to some delicious pastries with tea and coffee.
The first section was a bit of theory – Dean asked each of us what we planned to achieve from the day, so he could tailor his lesson to our specific requirements which was a great start, and helped us to understand more about what we’d learn. He immediately put us at ease with his charm and relaxed nature. He produced some slides which he used to explain the layouts of vegetable gardens. We also talked about the easiest vegetables to grow, and those which are the most decorative, whether you eat them or not.
The extensive kitchen gardens of The Yorke Arms formerly supplied a Michelin starred restaurant, and so are amazingly well stocked with a huge variety of edibles. Fortunately the sun decided to make an appearance and we were shown around, with Dean going to great lengths to explain the different types of plants and vegetables. His knowledge and enthusiasm are hugely infectious.
Having built up an appetite we were treated to a light and delicious two course lunch, provided by the in-house chefs. We had a delectable pate with chutney and fruit gel, followed by a piece of salmon with tomato coulis, all washed down with a spritz of gorgeous English wine. The staff were attentive and friendly, and made it their mission to put us all at ease throughout.
After lunch we were in full planning mode, and having got to know each other over a glass of wine, were by now giggling with each other and Dean, as we drew out some ambitious plans for our plot. Dean had prepared a plot for us to plant, and we used our drawings to create a pretty patch filled with herbs, vegetables and fruits. We were quite proud of our creation, which was not only decorative, but also likely to provide a bountiful harvest in the following weeks and months (or so Dean said!).
Finishing off with afternoon tea of homemade scones and jam meant that we finished the day happy and full, having made some new friends, and all pleasantly surprised at not only how much fun we’d had, but how much Dean had taught us in such a short space of time.
We departed with a jolly farewell to our new friends, and armed with a cutting of horseradish to hopefully nurture in our own gardens.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the courses – there appear to be a huge variety of different ones throughout the year, and I’m sure this won’t be my last. Thank you to Dean, Anna and the team at The Yorke Arms for a thoroughly enjoyable and informative experience."
